English Punctuation
Punctuation is essential to clear communication. When you are expressing yourself out loud, the way you phrase what you are saying implies the punctuation you are using. A definite pause is a “period” (to use the American term, точка). An upward inflection is a question mark (вопросительный знак). And when someone says a full-volume “Yes!”, we all can hear an exclamation mark (восклицательный знак).
When you are expressing yourself on the page or computer screen, to make your intentions clear, to avoid ambiguity (двусмысленность) and confusion, you need punctuation. In social networks and even emails some people seem to think any punctuation unnecessary. Of course, such messages will probably be understood, but it’s a bad habit to get into. So, use the punctuation correctly, if you want your texts (business letters, personal emails, documents etc.) be more comprehensible.
