Modals In First Conditional Sentences
In first conditionals we can also use modal verbs (other than will) in the main clause. Different modal verbs have different meanings.
Examples: 1. If you ask George, he may/might be able to help you. — Если вы попросите Джорджа, он, может быть, сможет помочь. (Возможность)
2. You can/may leave the room if you’ve finished the test. — Вы можете выйти, если уже закончили тест. (Разрешение)
3. If he doesn’t come soon, we must / will have to leave without him. — Если он скоро не придет, нам придется идти без него. (Необходимость)
4. If you ever go to Chicago, you should take a boat trip on the river. — Если вы когда-нибудь поедете в Чикаго, обязательно покатайтесь по реке на лодке! (Предложение, совет)
5. If you don’t watch your steps, you are going to fall over. — Если вы не будете смотреть под ноги, то упадете. (Прогноз, предсказание)
