Modals To Give Advice
We use the modal verbs should, ought to and had better or shouldn’t, ought not and had better not to give advice. Should and ought to have the same meaning, but the verb ‘should’ is more common. They can be used to refer to the present and the future time.
Examples: 1. You should eat more fresh fruit. — Тебе следует есть больше свежих фруктов. 2. You shouldn’t drive so fast. — Вы не должны ехать так быстро. 3. You ought just to be yourself. — Тебе нужно просто быть собой.
Ought not (without to) is the negative form of ought.
Example: She ought not watch this movie. She’ll be afraid tonight. — Ей не стоит смотреть этот фильм. Она будет бояться.
We use should to ask for or to give advice.
Example: What should I do? Should I look for another job? — Что мне делать? Искать новую работу?
