Successfully Using English at Work. Tip #3: Learn Slang and Idioms, Especially Those Relevant to Your Job
Every job, company, and industry has their “jargon,” or set of vocabulary and idioms that are specific to that job, company, or industry.
Be sure to make extra effort to learn the jargon, slang, and idioms that your co-workers use often so you can understand them better, and communicate with them better. Reading sections of the news relevant to your job is a great place to start. Knowing general slang words will also help you in day-to-day small talk.
For example: Business before pleasure– this idiom means that you should take care of your responsibilities before you relax and enjoy yourself.
I can’t come to the party. I have to work – business before pleasure.
