The bears started walking in the outdoor enclosure after the hibernation (зимняя спячка, зимовка) on 6 March. They woke up early due to the sudden warming. The 28-year-old Kamchatka brown bear Rosa and two Himalayan bears, Aladdin (26 y.o.) and Budur (25 y.o.), came out from hibernation. Last year, they didn’t show up (не показывались) from their artificial dens (берлога, логово) until April.
In the wild (в природных условиях), bears go into hibernation to survive the cold season. In captivity (в неволе) they also fall asleep in winter to prevent disruption of the natural body processes and create conditions close to natural. Bears living in the Moscow Zoo hibernated late in November. Zoologists regularly brought fresh water to their enclosures, because bears need to drink even during hibernation. When the animals sensed the approach of spring, they began to wake up slowly. You can already see them on the Animals Island in the new part of the Zoo.
