Maslenitsa is an ancient (старинный) Slavic celebration still popular in Russia. It’s a lively, joyous occasion, symbolizing the departure of winter and the coming of spring. Each day has its name and traditions. For example, Tuesday is called “zaigrysh,” (заигрыш) when people ride on sleighs (сани) and sing songs. On Friday, it is customary to visit your mother-in-law for bliny.
The weeklong celebration sees merry-making, people sledding down hills, and mock battles. In the streets and at marketplaces you can see lavish (щедрый, обильный) tables with marvelous foods and delights. It is believed that everyone has to eat as much as possible because the somber and austere period of Lent (Великий пост) followes Maslenitsa. Sure, bliny is still the main treat during the Pancake Week, although there are many other tasty dishes.
