Directed by Klim Shipenko, the Peasant (“Холоп”) has outrun (обогнал) the previous box-office hit this winter — a 2017 sports drama “Three seconds” (Движение вверх) — and become the top-grossing (самый кассовый, бестселлер) Russian film. It is about a spoiled rich boy who is sent back in time to be a lowly peasant in a pre-revolutionary Russian village. He doesn’t know that he is actually in an elaborate set with actors, all organized and funded by his rich father, who wants to teach him a lesson.
Grigory, played by Serbian actor Miloš Biković, is so caught up in his pampered (избалованный) lifestyle he thinks he is above the law. When he goes too far and faces a jail sentence, his father takes radical measures. As the experiment continues, Grigory has to learn how to communicate properly with people, to make friends, and to protect the girl he falls in love with.
The film opened on December 26 and continues to play in movie theaters.
