Modals To Express Assumptions
When
we assume something based on logic we can express it with must (in positive
assumptions). It means we are almost 100% sure of something.
Example:
It is Sunday. He must be at home.
(I’m sure he is at home.) — Сегодня воскресенье.
Он
должен
быть
дома.
In negative assumptions we use can’t
/ couldn’t.
Examples: 1. It is Sunday. He
can’t/couldn’t be at work. (I’m sure he isn’t at work.)
2. It can’t be
true. — 1.
Сегодня воскресенье. Он не может быть на работе. 2.
Не
может
быть,
чтобы
это
было
правдой.
May/may not,
might/might not express a lesser
degree of confidence.
Example: I left my car unlocked yesterday. It might
have been stolen, but luckily it wasn’t. — Я вчера оставил машину открытой. Ее могли украсть, но к
счастью, этого не произошло.
