Abbreviations in English: i.e. and e.g.
E.g. and i.e. are both Latin abbreviations we use in writing. E.g. [ˌiː ˈdʒiː] stands for “exempli gratia” and i.e. [ˌaɪ ˈiː] stands for “id est”. E.g. means “for example”, and is used when you want to list one or more examples.
Example: The names of political parties are always capitalized, e.g. the Green Party. — Названия политических партий пишутся с большой буквы, например, “Партия Зеленых”.
I.e. means “in other words.” It is not used with listing examples, but clarifies an idea with more information.
Example: The hotel is closed during low season, i.e. from October to March. — Этот отель закрыт не в сезон, то есть с октября по март.
It’s important to know that i.e. and e.g. are always written with a period. After the second period you can use a comma.
