A new documentary delving into the lives of two of Russia’s most prolific artists is set to premiere in Moscow.
Directed by Anton Zhelnov, Poor Folk follows the lives of Ilya and Emilia Kabakov across 2017 and 2018, with access to the couple’s homes in St. Petersburg and New York state.
It sees the pair discuss unofficial art in the USSR, the emergence (появление) of Moscow conceptualism, emigration to Europe and the United States, and Ilya’s decades-long refusal to exhibit (выставить) art in the Soviet Union.
The film was commissioned (был подготовлен) to mark Ilya Kabakov’s 85th birthday, as well as the 10th anniversary of the Garage Museum of Modern Art.
Poor Folk will be screening (будет показан) at Garage Museum of Modern Art Moscow daily between 16 – 25 September 2018.
